Five Prototypes of One Down Jacket: The Making of the Piuro Packable Jacket

Five Prototypes of One Down Jacket: The Making of the Piuro Packable Jacket

You know the feeling. You get back to your car after a solid cross-country skiing workout, you’re sweating, and within minutes, the cold sets in. Or you reach a windy ridge on a ski tour and need immediate warmth. It was exactly for these moments that we spent nine months fine-tuning the Piuro down jacket.

Why did the down jacket development take us so long?

We wanted a layer you could just pull out of your backpack for instant heat, without it taking up unnecessary space. The clear question from the development department was: "Why should we leave this category to other brands?"

From the very first sample in November 2025 to the final production approval in late July 2026, a total of five different prototypes were created. Here are the three main problems we had to solve along the way.

1. Leaking down feathers: With the second sales sample in February 2026, we discovered a major issue. The feathers started poking through the fabric. We sent back requests for better material quality three times. The result is a densely woven outer 100% nylon 400T shell treated with a special downproof finish. This keeps the feathers safely inside, and together with the DWR layer, it ensures water repellency against snow and sleet.

2. Sleeves that restricted movement: During the April fitting sample, we realized the sleeve simply lacked the right anatomical shape. There wasn't enough room in the shoulders, making arm movement difficult. We returned the prototype to the factory and completely redesigned the sleeve cut to naturally curve forward. When handling your gear at the car or quickly layering up on a ski tour, you need freedom of movement, not a straitjacket.

3. A pocket too small for the jacket: Right from the first prototype, it was clear that while the jacket was supposed to pack into itself, it just wouldn't fit into the designated inner pocket. We had to enlarge the packing pocket labeled PACK ME to its final dimensions of 23 × 27 cm.

What are you actually paying for with the Piuro?

The jacket is priced at 190 EUR, and it reflects the things we refused to compromise on:

  • High-quality filling: 90% duck down and 10% duck feathers with a fill power of 600 cuin. We intentionally didn't go higher – for quick warmth after sports or while waiting, it's absolutely sufficient. An expedition jacket with a higher fill power would be incredibly hard to pack into your backpack.

  • Durable material: The aforementioned nylon 400T keeps the feathers inside and withstands heavy use, as our abrasion resistance requirement exceeds 30,000 cycles.

  • Reliable zippers: You will find proven YKK Vislon zippers throughout. The main zipper is two-way – meaning it can be unzipped from the bottom when you're wearing a climbing harness or have your backpack's hip belt fastened.

  • Five development prototypes: Each sample cost extra money for production, shipping, and weeks of waiting.

PRO TIP: Wondering why the jacket has a 3M Thinsulate tag when it's insulated with down? We thought about the insulation down to the smallest detail. In the armpits and areas without traditional quilted baffles, we used a synthetic filling weighing 60 g/m². Unlike down, synthetic insulation retains its thermal resistance even if it gets slightly damp from sweat.

What it's for, and when you definitely shouldn't wear it

A down jacket for ski touring and cross-country skiing has a clear set of rules. The Piuro model is perfect for:

  • Changing into dry and warm clothes at the summit before the descent.

  • Taking a break by the car or waiting for your buddies on the trail.

  • Everyday city wear, thanks to its regular fit that easily accommodates an extra sports layer underneath.

When shouldn't you use it? During a high-tempo ascent. You would overheat immediately in a down jacket since sweat ventilation isn't its primary function. And as already mentioned, it's not a jacket for persistent rain either.
